Overview

The Stanford Woods Institute for the Environment is the central hub of Stanford University's environment and sustainability research, where experts across sectors and disciplines find solutions to critical and complex environmental and sustainability challenges. When they needed a redesign of their website, they turned to us.

Solutions

We worked closely with stakeholders at Woods, identifying the importance of enabling different types of users to easily navigate through the thousands of publications and other content that make up the Institute's interdisciplinary research, programs, and community.

The resulting design and organizational structure allows users to quickly navigate the site by core research areas, while filters enable them to quickly find information by topic, research area, and affiliation. All this makes it super-easy to search different types of content, including news, events, publications, and faculty/researcher profiles. These profiles can be fully sorted by type, school and research area, and are cross-linked to publications, presentations, and ongoing research.

We built a highly-customized Drupal-based Content Management System, and also developed and executed an extensive content migration plan, so that Woods and Emerge could work together to move massive amounts of content to the new site in a timely manner, all while maintaining extremely high quality standards.

Results

Total website visits are up more than 8%, individual page views are up 21%, and the site has seen a 62% increase in the number of visitors to the “Donate” page. Perhaps most encouraging is the increase in traffic to the News and Press Releases page: a 92% increase in hits. In addition to upping traffic, the Woods Institute also added 47 new subscribers to their newsletter, 50 new Facebook fans, and 88 new Twitter followers in the first month after launch.
